Olpe High School Scholarships

The Emporia Community Foundation oversees the scholarship funds within the Southern Lyon County Education Fund. The application below may be used to apply for any of the listed scholarships. Please review each scholarship for any additional material that must be submitted with your application.

Applications are due in the counselor's office by Friday, March 29th, 2024.

Michael L. Arndt Memorial Scholarship

Michael always valued hard work, honesty, and education. Growing up and raising a family in Olpe, he was so proud of his hometown. The Michael L. Arndt Memorial Scholarship was created to assist recipients with the cost of advancing their education. It was his hope the recipients of this scholarship will remember these values they learned growing up in Olpe as they continue their educational journey.

  • (3) $1,000 nonrenewable scholarships
  • Must be a 2024 Olpe High School graduate

Class of 1982 Scholarship

The Olpe High School graduating class of 1982 will award a scholarship to a member of the current year's graduating class.

  • Scholarship amount to be determined, nonrenewable
  • Must be a 2024 Olpe High School graduate

Class of 1999 Scholarship

The Olpe High School graduating class of 1999 will award a scholarship to a member of the current year's graduating class.

Dale M. Dennis Excellence in Education Award - Scholarship Sponsored by Bob & Brenda Redeker

The purpose of this award is to provide schools the opportunity to recognize a senior for his/her citizenship, service, scholarship, and demonstration of self-awareness.

The Dale M. Dennis Excellence in Education Award was established in 1996 by the Kansas School Administrators to honor the long and valuable service that Dale Dennis gave to Kansas Education. The individual characteristics of one's citizenship, service, scholarship, and self-awareness are what helped establish Dale Dennis as a friend of education and more importantly as a first-class citizen. Those characteristics are the basis for determining the recipient of this award. NO APPLICATION REQUIRED!

Dave "Goodie" Goodell Memorial Scholarship

Dave Goodell took great pride in being part of the Olpe Community and called it home for many decades. Goodie believed in the importance of hard work and being invested in your community.

  • $500 nonrenewable scholarships
  • Will be awarded after successful completion of the first semester
  • 1st preference: pursuing trade or craft at a technical college
  • 2nd preference: attending truck driving school
  • 3rd preference: majoring in education
  • 4th preference: majoring in health care

Highland Ranch/Scott & Carol Ritchie Scholarship

The Highland Ranch/Scott & Carol Ritchie Scholarship was created to help promote the youth at Olpe High School. They strongly believe that educating young people helps promote rural community growth.

Application must contain the following information:

  1. What important life lessons have you learned from living in the Flint Hills
  2. How have these lessons had an impact on your future plans
  • $500 nonrenewable scholarship
  • Must be a 2024 Olpe High School graduate
  • Seeking a degree in agriculture-related program of study or vocation program

Olpe Brinkman/Price American Legion Scholarship

The Olpe American Legion is pleased to announce two $250 nonrenewable scholarships for graduating 2023 seniors at Olpe High School. The Legion values the youth within the community and understand the importance they have upon making the town a special place to live. This scholarship opportunity will help them further their education and help prepare students for the next step in life.

  • (2) $250 nonrenewable scholarships
  • Must be a 2024 Olpe High School graduate
  • Priority will be given to someone that has a family member or has been a member of the armed services. Please include the name of that person on your application.

Cindy Raber Memorial Scholarship

Cindy Raber believed in setting goals and working hard to achieve them. She was a permanent fixture in the stands at all of the Olpe games and was like a grandma to many of the student athletes at Olpe High School. She loved watching Olpe compete in any sporting event and could always be found supporting the Olpe Eagles. Cindy touched many lives and will be remembered by those that knew her best as someone who was caring, friendly, and a joy to be around.

John & Laura Redeker Memorial Scholarship

John & Laura Redeker were husband and wife who lived on a small farm just north of Olpe. John was a successful farmer and stockman and Laura was a wife, mother, and homemaker. John and Laura were both active and supportive of the Olpe schools, community, and church events. Eight children were raised on that small farm where hard work was expected and required daily by everyone in the family. Many of the children still reside in Olpe to this day. John and Laura would be extremely pleased to know that there is a scholarship available in their memory.  

  • $250 nonrenewable scholarship
  • Must be a 2024 Olpe High School graduate

George Shipp Scholarship

The George Shipp Scholarship was created to benefit the youth in rural communities. Sustainability is a word that is used frequently in the world today. Local schools are a very important factor in sustaining small rural communities. The survival of communities is dependent upon the continuing education of the youth. Scholarships, such as this one, funded by the public will be a major contributor to this continuing education and will strengthen the community. The youth of the community is something that is strongly believed in as well as the importance of creating opportunities for growth. 

Application must contain the following information:

  1. Short Essay: Discuss the importance of rural communities. Include how your participation in activities have played a valued role in the survival of small towns.
  • (2) $500 nonrenewable scholarships
  • Must be a 2024 Olpe High School graduate
  • Seeking a degree in an agriculture-related program of study or vocation program

Southern Lyon County Education Fund Scholarship

The Southern Lyon County Education Fund is pleased to offer scholarships to Olpe High School graduating seniors. 

  • (3) $250 nonrenewable scholarships
  • Must be a 2024 Olpe High School graduate

Gene & Pat Steffes Family Scholarship

The family of Gene & Pat Steffes feels that this scholarship should go to a student who wishes to better themselves by continuing their education in the field of study that is presented under the major consideration factors. The secondary considerations are also important as they are critical components to the values that the student stands for. The family has become who they are because of the positive influence that the Olpe Schools have instilled in them and they wish to pass these values on to the next generation.

  • $1,000 nonrenewable scholarship
  • Must be a 2024 Olpe High School graduate
