Helen M. Lenninger Richard Vocational Education Scholarship

Helen Richard is a fourth generation lifelong Olpe resident. Helen's ancestors labored to build the St. Joseph Catholic Church and School from which she graduated in 1944. Helen chose to remain in Olpe where she worked in her Grandpa Diebolt's grocery store and cared for new mothers and their babies by cooking and cleaning. She also worked at the Municipal Auditorium in Emporia sewing tents for WWII soldiers, for when she took pride in being a "Rosie the Riveter" during the war.

Helen was a hard worker who valued her Catholic High School education. She cleaned the school each day to pay for her school tuition as her parents could not afford to pay the tuition.

Helen Richard would retire in 1996 at the age of 70, after serving 22 years as a school cook at Olpe Schools. Helen lived a simple, humble lift; not rich in money or things, but rich in what matters!
